The History of Thankful Baptist Church
1950- 2023
Thankful Baptist Church was a founded on December 5, 1950, by the late Reverend Chester Smallwood and was located at 1143 4th Street, NE. With only two (2) members, Thankful Baptist Church was able to rent a building within 1 month at 1361 Florida Ave. NE. Reverend Smallwood passed the baton to carry out the mission and vision of Thankful Baptist Church to Reverend Johnnie H. Crowder, who was installed as its first official Pastor on September 5, 1951.
In January 1952 Thankful Baptist Church relocated to 1609 12th Street, NW. After two moves, Thankful Baptist Church moved to its present home at 1401 Independence Ave. SE., on December 31, 1973. Thankful was able to burn the final mortgage in the fall of 1996.
Since the passing of Thankful’s first official pastor Reverend Crowder, Thankful has installed seven pastors.
Thankful’s seventh (7) Pastor, Reverend Norman King was installed on Sunday, April 25, 2010 and transitioned to be with the Lord Friday, August 21, 2015. His testimony to God and the Church Family was “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”

On Sunday, October 13, 2018, Pastor-Elect Robert H. Alston, Jr was installed and become the (8) eighth (new beginning) Pastor of Thankful Baptist Church. Pastor Alston loves the Lord with his entire being. In his brief time of being our Pastor, his dynamic leadership has caused the membership to increase by 36 members. Pastor Alston has also led in completing several improvement projects and upgrades around the church. We are so grateful to God for sending us a Pastor with a vision and about a Great work. To God Be The Glory!

Now in 2023 Pastor Robert H. Alston Jr is now Bishop-Elect Robert H. Alston Jr. All praise to his commitment and God.
